Travelling to Picton

Picton is a small seaside town that is the gateway to the Sounds. You can get to Picton from either Christchurch or Wellington.

By air from Wellington. Sounds Air flies several times daily from Wellington International Airport to Picton. Their fare is reasonable, usually about $80/person each way or sometimes a lower special web fare is available. They operate small aircraft with about 7-13 seats. From Picton airport, Sounds Air runs a free shuttle to the wharf in Picton connecting with launch services to Honeymoon Bay. Tell them you need the shuttle when you book your ticket on Sounds Air.

By sea from Wellington. The InterIslander and Blue Bridge run multiple daily ferry crossings between Wellington and Picton. The fare is usually $50-$65/person each way (cars are extra). Crossing times are around 3 to 3.5 hours for the trip. Launches to Honeymoon Bay will collect passengers from the ferry terminal wharf.

By public transport from Christchurch. TranzScenic operates a train once a day from Christchurch to Picton. Launch services to Honeymoon Bay are timed to coincide with the trains arrival. The train trip from Christchurch takes about 6 hours and includes spectacular scenery along the Kaikoura coast. InterCity coaches have a regular bus service between Christchurch and Picton. The bus usually arrives at a similar time as the train.

By car from Christchurch. Highway 1 runs from Christchurch to Picton, through Kaikoura (a chance to do some whale watching), along the stunning Kaikoura coast, through Blenheim and the Marlborough vineyards to Picton. The trip takes 4-5 hours however with so many things to do along the way you might want to plan for a whole day. Parking in Picton is excellent with an unlimited time carpark a few metres away from the wharves costing only $2/day (paid at a meter onsite).

Picton to Honeymoon Bay

There are no roads to Honeymoon Bay. Access by sea could be in a private boat, scheduled launch or water taxi. Honeymoon Bay is in Bay of Many Coves, the large bay between Ruakaka Bay and Endeavour Inlet. Entering Bay of Many Coves from Picton, Honeymoon Bay is the second occupied bay on the left.
